We had a long conversation and, like always, almost every topic had to do with the central issue in our lives: children. Then, we started talking about something that worries us: there are no places where they can vent and channel all of the hormonal energy of this stage in life. As mothers, we worry about their safety and integrity, but we feel guilty about this situation.
Recently J-Teen Leadershipa community service leadership program for high school students based in Westchester, New York — invited teens and their parents on a unique service trip to Cuba. Before leaving, the teens and their parents engaged their wider community in support, collecting over 2, pounds of clothes, medicines and Judaica to bring to the Jewish community in Havana. As a leader, this is my seventh ARCC trip — I am used to being flexible and rolling with the punches, but leading a teen service program in Cuba takes this to a whole new level. We are the first to run volunteer trips in Cubaand while our plan was originally to build a porch for a boy with cerebral palsy, right now there are no cement blocks in this part of Cuba. The work is incredibly rewarding.
Hi: I am a 38 year old woman who is planning an all inclusive vacation to Varadero, Cuba during the last week of March with my 16 and 17 year old girls. We definitely want to be on the beach. Close to town would be a bonus, but not a necessity.
Exploring Cuba as a family with older children offers a fascinating and rewarding holiday. You can share experiences together, as well as allowing younger travellers to enjoy some independence and parents the opportunity to relax! We have travelled throughout Cuba with our own families and using our excellent local knowledge, we have carefully prepared holiday choices to suit the whole family, which will keep everybody happy and entertained whilst you are away.
Cuba offers a glimpse into another era, as if everything here was put on pause several decades ago. Sixty years of isolation has resulted in a preserved culture where the streets on the island feel like they've just begun to come alive again, even as you glimpse iconic antique cars driving past you. In Havana, volunteer on infrastructure projects with a community of artists and learn about the country's complex history.
